What Is It?

November 19th, 2008

If it’s Wednesday, it must be time to present another unidentifiable, unappetizing food photograph.

There’s only one word for this one: EXTERMINATE!

Perhaps you have another word or two. Let us know in the comments.

Just a note to spammers: leaving your spam-filled comments in a post about spammers getting what they deserve isn’t going to work.

Early Daniel Craig

November 13th, 2008

With Quantum of Solace about to hit the screens, I thought it might be fun to dig up some way pre-Bond Daniel Craig. This is from a film called Hotel Splendide, released in 2000:

He first shows up just before the one minute mark. Points to anyone who recognizes the rather oily dancer.

What Is It?

November 12th, 2008

Welcome to another edition of What Is It? Wednesday! Yes, it’s time to take a look at another item masquerading as food and determine what it’s really supposed to be.

Submitted for your approval:

Yummy treats, or the November, 1957 output of the elevator button factory? Or something else? Let us know in the comments.

A Cold!

November 11th, 2008

I am utterly miserable. The 1904 medical book shows I should take something called nux vomica. I think I’ll pass, thank you very much. So far I’ve had plenty of hot tea (and biscuits!) and have taken all sorts of things to soothe the savage throat. So far, no luck - probably because I’m on a deadline and refuse to stop and rest. At least until House is on tonight. That could be just what the doctor ordered!

So, what do you do for a cold? Feed it? Starve it? Proffer it interesting drinks? I’m certainly open to suggestions.

BioBeer, Anyone?

November 10th, 2008

You may think that Guinness is good for you, but some students at Rice University have found a way to create a beer that just might make you live longer.

BioBeer is made with brewer’s yeast that has had three genes spliced into it. The genes produce resveratrol, the same chemical in red wine that scientists think is good for you.

The only real problem with the beer? The students who produced the brew are too young to drink the stuff. That, and it’s not commercially available yet. We’ll drink to it anyway!

You KNOW You Were Thinking This Tuesday Night

November 6th, 2008

Unless you’re living in a cave, you know all about the momentous event that took place on Tuesday. No, I’m not talking about THAT. I’m talking about CNN’s hologram technology.

Slate has their own take on Wolf Blitzer’s inteview with Jessica Yellin.

(Small caveat: I couldn’t get this video to run under Mozilla, but it worked under IE just fine. Fitting, perhaps, given the subject matter.)
